Visual Translator™, or VisTran™, is a new interpersonal translation system that utilizes the unique visual capabilities of portable electronic devices. Using both visual and written queues to convey meaning between peoples of different languages and cultures, the VisTran communicates in the language of imagery. With “Libraries” broken down into various subsections of Business, Travel, Social Activities and Emergency Situations, the VisTran can quickly convey meaning in a desired language. Each of the 225+ VisTran images comes with a selected phrase in the user’s language at the bottom of the image and the target translation language phrase across the top of the screen. In the middle is an image of the main object of interest. From finding a restroom to locating the nearest food store the VisTran gets the message across without confusion. If it’s finding a fax machine, a doctor, dentist, emergency room, refilling a prescription or calling the Police, the VisTran can quickly get the meaning across the language barrier. Without the complication of typing into an expensive translation device that sometimes produces results that are unintelligible.
